She said when the salesman set up her phone, she watched him unbox everything and was sure there was going to be a pretty thick manual to tell her how to use her new iPhone.
No such luck.
I've been an iPhone user for a decade, and I've unboxed more than my share of Android phones, including Samsung's most recent offerings, and none of them include any significant printed instructions.
Indeed, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 only includes a very small, folded Quick Start Guide to tell you how to charge the phone and insert the SIM card and optional memory card.
So what's a new smartphone user to do?
Of course Apple and Samsung (and other phone manufacturers) have extensive manuals online, and they really want you to read them on their websites. Including printed manuals is expensive.

There's a website called Android Central that is devoted to all things Android, including hundreds of articles to show you how to make better use of your phone.
iPhone users might want to head over to iMore.com's iPhone site. There you'll find an entire site filled with iPhone news and information.
Despite all the online resources, some people just want to read it on paper.
I'd like to recommend a book or two that'll get you up to speed with your new smartphone in no time.
iPhone users have a lot of titles from which to choose, but I'm a big fan of The iPhone: The Missing Manual - The Book That Should Have Been in the Box, from Yahoo Tech's David Pogue.
