Difference Between User Manual And Operation Manual

May 06, 2014  I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between a flight manual and an operating manual. I'm the archivist at the University of Miami responsible for providing access to the Pan American World Airways, Inc. The records contain a lot of manuals, some of which are titled 'flight manual' and others 'operating manual'. There is a lot of confusion with the words procedures and instructions, especially in a workplace setting. The main difference between the two is that procedures describe a process, while instructions act as guidelines. They often appear as a series of steps or stages one must complete one after the other. As nouns the difference between manual and instruction is that manual is a handbook while instruction is (lb) the act of instructing, teaching, or furnishing with information or knowledge. As an adjective manual is performed with the hands (of an activity). User guide versus User manual. As a practitioner who sometimes writes user guides and/or user manuals for computer software products, I offer the following thoughts: There is a significant difference between a user guide and a user manual, which is not mentioned in this article.

Key Difference: The term ‘manual’ or ‘guide’ both usually refer to a document whose main aim is to provide information or instructions. It is generally expected that guide are shorter, concise and more to the point than manual. A manual is expected to give more in. Sep 16, 2011  Help! What the difference between a policy, procedure, SOP? - posted in BRC Global Standard - Food Safety: I've been at a company for a week and I've been tasked with the job of re-writing the BRC Quality Manual to cover all clauses in the standard. Over the past 2 years I've seen 5 difference QM's which all have 3/4 folders titled policy/procedures, SOP's or Work instructions, forms, schedules.

Old merge discussion (2007/2008)[edit]

Hi, I believe this page (User_guide)should be merged with Owners_manual.

I agree. It is also known as 'user manual'. The user of a car is not always the owner, so this is not the reason to make a difference between owner's manual and user guide or user manual. All this terms may refer to many things. The software user manual is described in a section of Software_documentation.Arauzo 23:53, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Completely disagree and call into question the sanity, intelligence, breeding, intellect, education, lineage, and species of whomever was insane, stupid, ill-brought up, ignorant, unschooled, bastardly, and inhuman enough to suggest it in the first place. The distinction between an owner and a licensee is reason enough for the distinction.139.48.25.61 (talk) 19:05, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah an owner, licensee and user are not the same things. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.79.111.33 (talk) 09:24, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

A user's manual is not the same as an owner's manual because of the distinction between owner and licensee previously mentioned. User's manuals are usually for software, and owner's manuals are usually for equipment. Arthemise (talk) 20:57, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Definately Agree, with the above three comments. These should not be merged at all. An owners Manual and a user guide are two different things. It's the difference between operating a car and maintaining a car. They should not be merged, but there should definately be a comment on each explaining the difference and linking to the other. 202.12.233.23 (talk) 22:16, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

User guide versus User manual[edit]

As a practitioner who sometimes writes user guides and/or user manuals for computer software products, I offer the following thoughts:

  • There is a significant difference between a user guide and a user manual, which is not mentioned in this article.
  • This article would benefit from a section titled Computer software user guide.
  • The section on Car user's manual does not belong here.
  • There is justification for a separate article on User manual, with a section titled Computer software user manual.

For examples that illustrate some of the differences between a user guide and a user manual, see these websites:

Where is the apostrophe?[edit]

I noticed that Wikipedia shamelessly removes the apostrophe in articles like User guide or Tourist guide. But I don’t agree. An “Installation guide” would be without apostrophe because it is a guide about installation. But user guides are not about users, they are written for them. A linguistic evolution does not become good just because many people are stupid enough to follow it. If you have difficulties to remember how it is correct, I recommend reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

If nobody argues against me, it might happen that I'll try to create a new article User's guide and make User guide redirect to it.--LucSaffre (talk) 05:15, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

What’s the difference between an Operations Manual and a Procedures Guide? At first glance, it’s easy to see the confusion as both contain procedures that need to be followed. However, if we look at them a little more closely, we can where and how they differ.

Operations Manuals v Procedures Guides

Samantha emailed me to ask about preparing ‘an operations manual for my employer.’

There were two main criteria:

Difference Between User Manual And Operation Manual

‘The main task is teaching examination skills to health professions, such as doctors and nurses.

Operation

My boss wants a manual that will enable anyone to show how things work and to cover any gaps in knowledge when key personnel are no longer available.

The document should detail the what, why, who, when, and how.

Which one of your templates will enable me to best build such a document?’

Here was my response:

Re: My boss wants a manual that will enable almost anyone to keep the show going in the event that any of the key personnel are no longer available.

Use the procedure templates for this type of activity rather than our Operations Manual template.

The reason I say this is that other companies have used this template to capture how different tasks are achieved and maintain them going forward.

The approach I’d take is to:

  • Define all the tasks you want to capture
  • Create a Table of Contents
  • Write a procedure for each task

The difference between the two type of documents is that the Operations Manual is usually focussed on the operations of an IT system.

For example, what tasks do you need to perform to operate the system on a daily basis? The focus is technical and specific to software (or an application, network, or hardware.)

Whereas… procedures show someone the steps to follow to perform a task, which may not be technical.

For example:

  • How to check a customer’s credit card statement.
  • How to apply a discount to a customer’s account.
  • How to update the HR database every quarter.

And so on.
